Did essentially nothing

Watered the flats. Checked that much of the lettuce and dill has germinated. A lonely little pepper broke ground.

Getting ready for carrots

Prepared the side of the garden for carrots. This has not been gardened before and was in bad shape, although the soil underneath was excellent. I am hoping to add two long rows. Dug down well over a foot. IYH I'll mix in topsoil and direct seed the carrots this week.

Indoors, most of the tomatoes are now wee tomato plants. The scallions are surprisingly fast.

Potatoes

Prepared the additional raised bed that had been added over lawn. Mixed in some top soil and added garden twine to mark the rows. Planted Yukon Gold and red potatoes. Added one row of kale at the far end, to finish the bed.

Spinach has broken ground, and one single, lonely onion.

Tomatoes, more garden prep

A few more tomatoes germinated.

Saw some signs of life in the onions outdoors.

all four of the raised beds are now prepped and ready to go.

Planted eight shallots. I was interrupted.

Cleared out a side bed that has not been used.

Took photos of foot-long earthworms. I have named them Merkle and Sarkozy.

Raised beds redux

Set out seed potatoes that have not been planted in a box to germinate.

Dug the weeds out of the raised beds, etc., turned soil. Purchased top soil to make up the difference. I have four beds on the go this year.

Weeded the over-wintered parsley and the rhubarb.

New growth on the raspberries.

More flats

Planted two new flats: the first has fennel, kale, and . . . I can't remember for some reason. The second has three types of lettuce.

The scallions have germinated.

Today the family carpenter came by and constructed two new raised beds and one replacement for the raised bed that gave up the ghost last year. We are still using the original beds that we inherited with the house.

Three of the cherry tomatoes have germinated, but most are still beneath the ground.

The sunflowers are growing like mad.

It's mainly been raining, so not much getting done.

More time under the grow light today for everyone. Planted some scallion seeds as well -- three rows in what used to hold crackers. Two of the cherry tomato seeds have germinated. Using more water to keep the seeds moist when they're getting so much light.

Life!

The sunflower seeds have clearly germinated. The Yellow cherry tomatoes are starting to germinate -- I can just see one coming out. So, light sources.

The sunflower seeds are under a surprisingly powerful embroidery light.

Today I went to home depot and obtained a shop lamp and a set of bulbs called "cool white." we'll see how this goes.

Tomato Seeds

Tomato seeds arrived today from Salt Spring Seeds. This is my third year using Salt Spring Seeds and I've been very happy with them last year and the year before. I have focused on cherry tomatoes (my husband's favourite), early producers, and west coast varieties. We have:

Pollock Tomato
Patio Orange
Red Belgian pepper
Gardener's Delight - small cherry
Boldog Hungarian Spice
Sunshine Yellow small yellow cherry

Today I will be planting the Sunshine Yellow using premixed potting soil in an egg carton. They will need to be lit when they appear. Intend to transfer when they sprout two sets of leaves.
